: Asuran opens with a shot of the moon sign in stagnant water. But the visual acuity is lost when the foot enters the water. This single shot evokes the main plot of the film - the peace of the family destroyed by the act of negligence.
The family belongs to Sivasamy (Dhanush), a small farmer from the lower division. And Narasimhan (Aadukalam Naren), a wealthy landowner from the above section, plans to take over his three-hectare land, build a cement factory, and tensions are raging between the two families. Matters come to a head when Sivasamy's eldest son, Murugan (TeeJay Arunasalam) humiliates Narasimhan, and the latter retaliates by brutally killing him. Sivasamy is still trying to protect his family by taking the initiative to fight the war, his angry young son Chidambaram (Ken) could not see his mother Pachaiyamma (Manju Warrier) suffering, killing Narasimhan. Since the landlord's relatives want the boy's blood, can a patriarch save his family and eradicate hostility?
With Asuran, familiar with Poomani’s revered novel, Vekkai, Vetri Maaran introduces another drama of solid action that keeps us focused from start to finish. He treats the first half as a survival game, father and son trying to avoid Narasimhan's men on their way. You also enter these moments with scenes that have led to this life or death situation. He goes on to create tension in the scene, and it all boils down to a hero's best moment. He lets social and political factors sink into the bottom line of happiness, and brings them to the forefront of the second phase, through Sivasamy's history. This approach makes Asuran different. It shows how the division of branches was transformed into a division of the class, as the participants are always different. In fact, the caste is not explicitly mentioned until the last parts. The film is always a rich or poor war on the face as Vetri Maaran drops enough caste marks to make us realize that the issues are very deep.
Guaranteed storytelling (not a single waste of time), combined with solid film production (Velraj cinema, in particular, is an outstanding feature) and good drama, often with us on the edge of our seats. And the director gets some notable performance from Dhanush, who is recommended here. Playing an older character than his real age, the character convincingly expresses the resilience of a 40-plus man. Her limbs are weak, her movement is slow and unstable, and her speech has tremendous added years to our voice worship. This should be among his best performances.
